Bergen, Norway

Since the ship could not make up time from our delayed departure from Southampton due to high seas and strong winds, we arrived in Bergen 2 hours late today.  But that gave us better viewing as we spent nearly 2 hours cruising up the scenic fjord to Bergen. This fjord did not have the high mountains we envisioned, but was still pretty with lots of rocks, cliffs, and islands.  We passed a drilling derrick yard on the way in as there is still active drilling going on in the North Sea.
Once docked we ate lunch then lined up for our excursion, a 2 hour boat ride on the fjord followed by a bus ride back to town and a walking tour of the old fish market part of the city, a Unesco cultural heritage site.  I was surprised to learn I had "relatives" here!  Of course I had to go inside and look around.
We skipped the dining room tonight and enjoyed not having to dress up since we ate at the buffet.  After that we headed to an Elton John tribute show in the theater. It was OK as he sang a few of Elton's more popular songs and acted as I've heard Elton does, and it was a nice end to the evening.

Oh I can see the Schjott family's store from the photo taken from the ship (I would guess). So cool you got the photos of it!! I watched as you left Norway and headed out to the open sea. Very pretty! I found the site to track the ship so I could see exactly where you were going...very cool. I did that when you were on the Alaskan cruise too. Can't wait to see the Shetland Islands. Did you know you can actually drive from Bergen to the Islands? I wondered what the distance was so I googled it...the map came up showing me how to drive it, hilarious! Of course it involved ferries and went through about 6 countries...but who knew!! Sleep tight, more fun tomorrow :) Sylvia
