We had an enjoyable mid-day excursion to visit the Puerto Montt area in southern Chile. Our bus took us first to Puerto Varas, a quaint city on the shores of Lake Laquinhue, Chile's largest lake. The city is famous for the rose bushes that line many streets. We walked around before visiting a local artisan market where I noticed a sweater I liked (and bought!). Later a panpipes band in the town square started playing some popular show tunes, and as we were about to board our bus they started playing Annies Song! What a great surprise!
A short bus rude brought us to Fruitilla to visit a German Settlers Outdoor Museum. We enjoyed walking around the old buildings. On the left is a picture of their garden as well as one of the buildings. The pictures on the right are an 1880's kitchen and a picture of their mill. It was interesting to walk around and hear how these German people came to live in southern Chile, and we followed this with a snack of homemade cinnamon buns at a local cafe.
On returning to our cabin we received an update about baby David. His condition is somewhat better, but it appears he will remain in the NICU until his collapsed lung issue is cleared up.
Tomorrow we have another sea day before heading to a glacier. I did not realize they had glaciers in South America!
